This is music, you guys listen to at school.

Yeah, pretty dumb right?

Now this is music, I listen to, everyday, not at school just all the time.

You see the difference?

You know, you know, I'm just gonna make it louder, if that's okay.

OKAY!

NO!

TURN IT DOWN, TURN IT DOWN TURN IT DOWN.

Okay that might've been a little bit too loud.

And I'm not going to do that again.

Just so you know I'm not doing that again.

Anyway, um, uhh yeah, that's, that's all.

For the video.

I just wanted to show you guys the difference between those two songs.

What's the difference between preserve, conserve, and reserve? - Duration: 8:27.

When I want to spend some time in nature, I often go to my local forest preserves, but

when I'm doing field work, I'm on conservation land.

So when it comes to nature and green spaces, what's the difference between preserve,

conserve, and reserve?

We can start by taking a look at the literal meanings of these words.

To preserve is to "maintain something in its original or existing state."

To conserve is to "protect something - especially an environmentally or culturally important

place or thing - from harm or destruction."

Definitions for "conserve" often include phrasing that implies that the protection

is being done so that limited use can be made of the thing being protected.

To reserve is to "refrain from using or disposing of something; to retain for future

use."

So when used in the context of nature, all 3 terms imply setting aside land to not be

used for much, if any, human uses, with the levels of human use allowed varying with the

format of the individual preserve, reserve, whatever.

It's also probably worth noting that the Wikipedia entry for "Nature Reserve" sort

of treats all 3 terms as interchangeable synonyms, which indicates to me that there's not always

a clear distinction between them.

But it's not just about how we use these words now.

Most of the distinction between these words, especially between preservation and conservation,

was established during the environmental movement in the United States in the early 1900s.

While many people and issues were part of this movement and the ideas that came out

of it, the classic example story is still John Muir versus Gifford Pinchot in the fight

over the damming of the Hetch Hetchy Valley to provide water to San Francisco.

John Muir said that the Hetch Hetchy Valley was beautiful and valuable all on its own, and

that it shouldn't be destroyed for human gains.

He was the face of the preservation movement.

Gifford Pinchot believed in the wise use of natural resources.

He had trained in the forestry schools of Europe, and he became the face of the conservation

movement.

While Muir lost the battle over Hetch Hetchy, his faction did wind up winning many other

large victories.

The idea of wilderness preservation led to the first national parks in the US - stay

tuned for a video on what "wilderness" really means.

And our national parks are great!

But it is worth noting that a large part of the reason they were able to so easily be

set aside as "preserves" was because they were parcels of land that hadn't already

been developed.

I mean, nobody wants to plow fields in Yellowstone!

Aesthetics were another major reason for the parks being protected, even though some of

us may wish that they had been chosen for their contributions to biodiversity or other ecological

significance.

The government would have had a much more difficult time selling the idea of national

parks to the public if they hadn't also been beautiful places for people to hike and drive

through.

All of this really gets to the heart of the issue: these words are value judgements of

nature.

Conservation is about the wise-use of natural resources, and preservation is about the

intrinsic value of nature undeveloped.

Neither is all-right or all-wrong, but the perspectives that each provides are interesting.

When we return to the present-day context of these words, we can see that even more

ideology has gotten wrapped up in them.

Specifically, there can be political motivation behind using conservation versus

preservation.

Studies have shown that "preservation" sounds very restrictive to many people, while

"conservation" tends to sound more appealing, especially to traditionally conservative voters,

because it allows for human use of natural resources.

There's also this idea of preservation as "letting nature take its course," so

not disturbing ANY wildlife, plants, bodies of water, or geologic features, versus conservation,

which is the idea of "managed" or human-affected nature.

However, the whole "nature's balance" thing is kind of a myth, because all systems

in nature are dynamic and go through changes, so in essence preservation might not be possible.

And at this point, we can't really say that there are many (or maybe any) ecosystems left

on Earth that aren't managed by humans.

All ecosystems on our planet have been indirectly affected by humans, and most are also directly

affected in at least one way.

What happens when we choose to rigidly preserve land - i.e. give it the hands-off treatment,

so no or minimal management - but the ecosystem might actually benefit from active management

or disturbance?

I've been thinking about this a lot lately due to my research.

The pine forests of the southeast and the midwestern prairies evolved with fire, but

if those areas aren't actively managed they won't receive that fire disturbance.

Or what if a preserved area received an invasive exotic species?

Would we stand by while the invader pushed native species out of ecological niches,

or would we be okay actively managing the situation?

Regardless of what words we use to describe them, it's more important than ever that

we protect areas of our world that are still home to natural ecosystems.

Wikipedia lists 23 countries that have some sort of established nature reserves, refuges,

and/or national parks.

But The Nature Conservancy estimates that only about 5% of land at high-risk for development

is protected world-wide.

Without these protected places, we will lose our biodiverse species and the systems that

clean and restore our air and water.

We need to set aside protected areas for our own species's survival.

Of those 23 countries, World Atlas has a top-10 list determined by the total percentage of

land cover a country has set aside as protected.

Venezuela is #3, with almost 54% of their land area protected,

and Germany is #4, with almost 48% of their land area protected.

The US doesn't make this top-10 list, with only about 14% of our land area and 12% of

our marine areas protected.

But since these are percentages, we have to keep in mind that the United States is the

3rd biggest country in the world by land area.

That means that even though we've protected a relatively small amount of our own land, the US's protected

lands account for approximately 1/10 of all protected lands on the planet.

Federal protected lands in the United States are managed by the National Park Service,

the U.S. Forest Service, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and/or the Bureau of Land

Management, plus all of the states and many local municipalities have their own protected

lands as well.

So are protected lands in the US preserved or conserved?

Uhm… yeah.

There's a little bit of everything, and it very much depends on who's in charge,

where the protected area is, and what sorts of resources it includes.

Many of our protected lands still allow for resource extraction, including but not limited

to timber harvest; coal, oil, and other mineral resource mining; livestock grazing, hunting,

and fishing.

They're also often open for recreational activities ranging from hiking to speed boating.

To make it even more confusing, there doesn't seem to be any pattern to the convention of

using the words "conservation" or "preservation" to indicate the kinds of uses permitted in

a particular area.

For instance, in some places you'd be permitted to go hunting in a "preserve," even

though that's not necessarily what the word implies!

If you'd like to explore all of the protected land and marine areas in the United States,

I found a really cool interactive map that you can check out using the link in the description.

You can zoom in to see particular protected areas, then click on them to find out what agency

is in charge of managing them.

What do the words "preservation" and "conservation" signal to you, and which one do you prefer?

Had you heard about the classic Muir-Pinchot debate?

What do you think is the best method for protecting natural areas?

LEND or BORROW? What's the difference? | English Grammar Lesson - Duration: 8:10.

Hi guys and welcome back to Love English. I'm Leila and today I've got a nice

simple lesson for you. I say it's simple because I'm looking just at two words

that you guys frequently get confused. Those words are 'lend' and 'borrow'. Lend and

borrow are very similar words, in that their meaning is referring to the same

thing the temporary exchange of something of

an item before we get started and I explain the difference between lend and

borrow, do make sure you click that subscribe button below and of course at

the notifications bell until it looks like this so that you can be one of the

first to watch comment and receive feedback on your English from Sabrah and

me now at the end of the lesson you can go down to the comment section below

there I have put at the top of the comments bar some questions some gap

Phil's looking at when to use lend and borrow so two pieces of homework for you

today the gap fill and some questions and sentences that you create yourself

with lend and borrow and of course Sabra and I always do correct your English so

you've kind of got your own personal teacher for free

right guys on with the lesson lend and borrow first of all let's start with the

meaning quite simply lend is to give and borrow

is to take now when we do lend something to another person we expect to get it

back it is for a temporary period of time likewise when we borrow something

from another person we only want it for a short temporary period of time so

there's certain things that you can't borrow you wouldn't say can I borrow

your sandwich because really you can't give that back the kinds of things we

would talk about in this situation is a pen money someone's car your computer so

to lend in American English they often say loan it has the same meaning to give

someone something for a short period of time so I lent him my car or I loaned

him my car pay attention there if you hadn't already realized lend is an

irregular verb lend lent lent whereas borrow to take is a regular verb so it

ends in E D I borrowed his car now when you borrow something it means you owe it

back you have to give the item back it does not belong to you now the structure

of these sentences is something that can frequently get confused and depending on

where you place your object pronouns you may need to use a preposition so for

example sabra lent me 10 pounds Sabra subject length the verb me the object

Pro now and 10 pounds this would be the

secondary object so you would have an object pronoun the person that is taking

the item that is borrowing the item subject verb object pronoun and object

now you could also switch this around and it kind of just changes the emphasis

of the sentence what you are more focused on

so you could say sabra lent 10 pounds to me

Sabra lent 10 pounds to me now be careful because when we have the object

pronoun at the end of the sentence coming after the item the object that

was lent then you need a preposition and this goes for both borrow and lend in

the case of lend remember it means give and the preposition we have with give is

2 so sabra lent 10 pounds to me whereas if the object pronoun doesn't come at

the end you don't need the preposition sabra lent me 10 pounds now let's look

at the structure of borrow I borrowed 10 pounds from Sabra so in this case

Sabra is going to be the object pronoun the name Sabra is who I borrowed it from

so you do need the preposition from here to identify where the item came from and

who you owe that item back to I borrowed 10 pounds from Sabra let's look at some

more examples I borrowed a jumper from Sabra I

borrowed a jumper from Sabra or I borrowed say Burris jumper I borrowed

Sabres jumper there you can see I have got a possessive s to show that it

belongs to Sabra of course if we were use an object pronoun I borrowed her

jumper it needs to be a possessive pronoun the possessive adjectives in

this case so those common errors that you guys do make is obviously confusing

the meaning between lend and borrow and as well the structure so for example he

borrowed me his pan he borrowed me his pan or getting those prepositions

confused he lent it from me he lent it from me so remember those

prepositions so you don't get them confused give to lend to take from

borrow from let's just have a look and go through a few more examples to make

sure the meaning is really clarified as well as the structure

I borrowed a cup from him I borrowed a cup from him he lent me his cup he lent

me his cup he lent his cup to me can you lend me a pen can you lend me a pen he

lent his pen to me I borrowed a pen from him I borrowed his pen so comment below

check out that little mini quiz in the comment section and of course write some

sentences about yourself as well have you ever lent anything to someone and

not got it back have you been the person to borrow something from someone and not

give it back lend and borrow two words that you guys

will frequently get confused but hopefully now I have clarified the

difference in meaning and as well the structure you need to use thank you so

much for watching I look forward to reading your comments in the section

below and of course don't forget to like this lesson share it with your friends

who are learning English and if you haven't already click that subscribe

button and the notification spell so you'll be one of the first to receive

updates of our newest lessons thank you so much

Fans only need to look at clips of Pogba in the France dressing room during the World Cup final to see his leadership qualities and they seem to have been transferred to his club career

Solskjaer is allowing him to have a larger influence on the squad, encourage fellow players and take responsibility in key moments

What a difference a new manager can make.  Do you think Pogba should become United's next captain? Have your say in the comments section below

Single and Recurring SMS Programs - What Is the Difference? - Duration: 0:58.

I'm Derek Johnson with tatango.com, and I'm answering the question, "What's the difference

between a recurring and single message program?"

So there's two different kinds of text messaging programs.

One is a single message program and one's a recurring message program.

The name kind of gives it away, but I'm gonna explain it.

So the single message program is texting something, get something back, that's the end of the

conversation.

You're not collecting phone numbers for future text messaging.

A recurring text message program is text something in to join a list, which then you'll be marketed

to in the future on a frequent basis, hence the "recurring" part.

So, single message, recurring, they both use text messaging, but they are very very different.

So hopefully, that answers the question, "What's the difference between a single and recurring

text message program?"
