[RINGING]

Hi.

It's Doug.

Are you a fan of donuts?

Well, I'm standing outside a donut shop near my house.

Look at the size of this.

Isn't that huge?

We got a question about donuts this week

from someone named Connell.

So let's give him a call now.

[RINGING]

Hi, Doug.

Hi, Connell.

I have a question for you.

How did donuts get their name?

That's a great question.

Why do we call donuts donuts?

To be honest, we could have called them anything.

We could have called them schmoop la doops.

Or we could have called them sassenfringles.

Fingal's

But no, we call them donuts.

Why?

Why donut?

What's so interesting about questions

like this is how do you figure out how anything came

to be called what it's called?

To solve this kind of mystery, there's a secret tool--

this thing.

It's awesome.

It's a special kind of book.

It's a kind of dictionary.

Now you might know that a dictionary is a book that

has every word in our language.

And you can look up any word.

And it tells you how to spell it and what that word means.

This thing is a special kind of dictionary.

It's called an etymology dictionary.

Now let me tell you what that means.

I wish it had a better name.

Etymology means the story of a word.

So this doesn't tell you what a word means.

Instead if you look up a word in this book,

it tells you the story of the word.

It tells you why we chose to call the word that word.

So what I can do is I can look up donut

in the etymology dictionary.

And here we get our first clue.

Now you might have seen donut spelled like this--

D-O-N-U-T, right?

That's how a lot of people spell it today.

But donut is sometimes spelled like this,

and this is how it used to be spelled.

Does that give you any clues?

Just by looking at the word, can you

tell where at least part of the word donut comes from?

Now would be a good time to pause

the video if you want to take a guess.

You ready?

Look at the first part of that word, the dough part

of the word doughnut.

You might have heard of dough before.

Donuts are made of dough.

It's the same stuff we use to make bread.

So that's the dough part.

But now what about the second part of that word, nut?

A donut doesn't look like a nut.

What's it got to do with a nut?

It seems like nothing.

But if you look in the etymology dictionary, it tells us.

Donuts weren't always a thing.

They were introduced from the Dutch,

a people who live in Europe, who called them olykoeks.

Now that's Dutch for oil cake.

It's dough that you fry in oil, which makes it become cake.

So you got oil cake.

Now that name didn't catch on for them.

So why would we start calling them donuts?

Well, notice what those original Dutch donuts looked like.

Do you notice how they don't have a hole in them, do they?

There's no hole.

We think of donuts as round with a hole in it.

I mean if it doesn't have that, it's not a donut, right?

But it turns out the hole came later.

You see, instead, donuts used to look like this,

a round glob of dough.

A lot of people thought that the shape of this

looked like a nut, almost like an almond.

So the name became donut because it's

a fried ball of dough that seemed

to be in the shape of a nut.

There you have it, all of this thanks to the special tool,

the etymology dictionary, a book that

tells you the story of a word.

What other words do you think would be interesting to look up

in an etymology dictionary?

Well, if you want to look up any word,

here's an etymology dictionary online

that you can go to-- etymonline.com.

That's all for this week's question.

Thanks, Connell, for asking it.

Now for the next episode, I reached into my question jar.

And I found three questions submitted to me that I'm

thinking about answering.

When this video is done playing, you'll get to vote on one.

You can choose from, "Where does metal come from?"

or "Why isn't Pluto considered a planet anymore?"

or "How high can an airplane go?"

So submit your vote when the video's over.

I want to hear from all of you watching.

There are mysteries all around us.

Stay curious.

And see you next week.

Why Do We Have Earwax? - Duration: 2:32.

Hey, Squeaks!

I have a question for you:

Have you ever put your finger in your ear and wondered what that waxy stuff in there is?

It's okay, you can be honest!

It might be sticky and yellow, or dry and flaky.

But either way, it's earwax!

And it's really important for protecting your ears.

Earwax is also called cerumen, and it's made by special tiny parts of the ear canal

inside your ear.

Ears are pretty amazing.

There's the part you can see on the outside, like your ear lobes, but there's also a

whole lot of stuff happening inside of your ear!

Your ear canal, where your earwax comes from, is kind of like a tunnel that connects to

the outside of your ear.

Your ears are always making earwax, but you don't make any kind of wax anywhere else

in your body.

After the earwax is made, it moves from the middle of your ear canal, to the outer part

of your ear canal where you can easily see, and even touch it!

And you know what, Squeaks?

Your earwax is moving right now, as we're talking

When your mouth moves around as you talk and chew, that helps push the earwax along, toward

the outside of your ear.

So talking to you right now is keeping my earwax in motion, too!

Earwax may seem pretty simple, but it has a lot of jobs.

Most importantly, it keeps your ears protected!

It moisturizes your ears to keep them from getting too dry and itchy, and it also helps

get rid of tiny pieces of dead skin from your ear canal.

b It also has the really important job of keeping

germs out of the inside of your ear, where they could give you an infection.

Earwax also protects your eardrums: a thin, skin-like layer inside your ears that helps

you hear sounds.

Since it's so sticky, earwax can stop and catch any pesky specks of dust and dirt before

they get to your sensitive eardrums.

So, earwax is totally awesome!

And there's nothing special you need to do to get rid of it or keep your ears clean

— just taking baths is usually enough.

Different people have different kinds of earwax — there's the extra sticky kind, and the

dry and flaky kind.

But don't go sticking anything in your friends' ears to figure out what kind of earwax they have

It's not a good idea to stick anything in your ears, or anyone else's ears, because

you could hurt them.

All types of earwax are incredible ear protectors.

For such a simple thing, earwax does a lot of hard work!

Why do ethnic Albanians do the double-headed eagle? - Duration: 4:24.

Let's do it in Albanian.

Can you say "hello and welcome to Tama Gotcha" in Albanian?

Wait, I have to think.

She has to think.

Maybe she doesn't speak Albanian.

Of course I speak Albanian!

Wait a second.

In my opinion Arjeta has an Albanian shell,

but otherwise to me you're Swiss through and through.

You're a tough woman, you've built up a career.

For me it's totally normal that I graduated from an academic school

and began studying law.

I finished with a degree in journalism.

Then I worked and worked.

Maybe it's just a cliché, but it seems to me

that many 20-year-old Albanians

are getting engaged or even married already.

It's true, people tend to choose a partner quite early and settle down.

On the dating programmes on Tamil television

they always say, "I want a homely wife".

What is a good wife?

A good wife can make pita.

It's important that the wife looks after the children.

I am not opposed to the traditional family model.

I wouldn't mind not having to work anymore.

Girls! Living with your in-laws, yes or no?

There are lots of funny answers, such as:

Your mother raised you, and you leave her for a person you just met.

You are not a man.

And there's something even worse written here.

It wouldn't be decent to translate it.

This is also a topic of discussion among Tamils.

For us, it's normal for the wife to move in with the husband

and live with his family.

I would live with my in-laws.

You would totally do that?

Of course.

Then they could look after the children.

The two of us come across as so modern…

No really! I know of many cases where it's not an issue at all.

On the contrary, the women are happy about being able to work.

Would you do that: live with your in-laws, yes or no?

It seems to me that Albanians

are even more proud of their heritage than other foreigners.

This is how I understand it:

We all had to leave our homeland,

some for economic reasons, others as refugees.

There is such a connection with the place where you are from

where you have lived for generations.

That's one of the most famous songs about the homeland.

About longing for the homeland.

That's exactly what I mean. All Albanians do that:

the double-headed eagle.

We are extremely proud of people who are pursuing international careers.

If you look at what is trending on YouTube right now:

It's always Albanian singers, such as Bebe – how do you pronounce it?

Actually her name is Bleta Rexha.

In English it's Bebe Rexha.

If you are successful, you are totally hyped.

But if you mess up, it's over.

You get bashed and insulted?

You are a social outcast.

Take the example of homosexuality:

it's still a taboo topic.

If somebody comes out…

Difficult.

It's not well received.

There's lots of comments, but I can't translate them.

Some of it is really offensive.

People think it's a scandal.

Yes, apparently it's not okay to celebrate gay pride in Albania.

Hope you like this vlog. In Albanian we say: …

And we'll see you again next week. Bye.

So lovely, it gives me goose pimples.

why to use clingfilm - Duration: 1:56.

- Hi I'm Janice from Thames Training

and today I wanted to talk to you about

treating a burn and using clingfilm on it.

So most of us know that if we get a burn

we need to cool it with nice cool water,

that's going to help stop it hurting

and it's going to help take the heat out of the burn.

What we then need to do,

is cover it up with clingfilm.

And there are three reasons we cover it with clingfilm.

It's really important to treat even little burns

with clingfilm because actually, there is a benefit.

So the first reason we use clingfilm is that it won't stick.

So if I've got a burn here on my wrist

and it had blistered

and we covered it up with a bandage,

what would happen is that bandage would stick

to the fluid from the blisters;

where clingfilm won't stick.

The second reason is that it's going to block out air

and that's quite important

because by blocking out air,

we block out bacteria.

And that's very important

because burns do tend to get infected very easily,

so we want to block out as much bacteria as possible.

And the third reason is

that it actually helps to stop the pain.

So you have probably had a burn

where you've cooled it,

and you think, yeah that's a lot better

and then you take your hand out

and it just starts to throb; ow, ow, ow.

And it does that throbbing

because when it got burned,

the nerve endings were damaged

and now they're on high alert

and as air hits them,

it sends a pain signal.

If we take clingfilm and cover that up

air doesn't hit it,

so it doesn't send a pain signal.

So it actually helps to stop that throbbing.

So it's really worth treating your little burns

at home with clingfilm

even when they might not need any medical treatment.

I hope this has been helpful.

Skin lightening: why do Tamil women do it? - Duration: 4:36.

Hello and welcome to Tama Gotcha!

Can you see it?

Here?

Or here?

Why am I wearing such different make-up?

There are negative associations

when Tamils talk about dark skin.

That's right.

In our culture, dark skin is not considered beautiful.

And that's not just the case among Tamils.

I have friends from the Philippines who also avoid the sun.

The Chinese and Japanese do likewise.

What I find really weird are the tricks people use to lighten their skin tone.

You always have an umbrella with you.

You're always in the shade.

Sometimes I cross the street to be on the shady side.

It's really embarrassing,

but people always talking about skin colour had an effect on me.

"Light is good and dark is bad."

White peopletry to become darker, especially in summer.

They sunbathe for hours.

I went on a beach holiday once and only once.

I got a sun allergy.

They risk getting skin cancer just to have darker skin.

nd we're just as stupid at the other end of the scale.

We smear bleaching shizzle on our faces in order to have lighter skin

although it's carcinogenic.

These are various bleaching creams,

to make your skin a bit lighter.

Can I take a look?

This is Fruit Fair.

It sounds quite natural at first.

But then I can't see a single fruit.

Glycerine, sterates, sodium acid phosphate.

You're putting acid on your face.

Along with a bit of colour and perfume.

Girls, are you nuts?

I just want to say, you apply it once or twice a year.

Not once a month.

That's not good at all.

We Tamils don't spend a lot of time in the sun.

So we have less vitamin D.

But the melanine that makes our skin dark

protects us from the sun.

Then we're like vampires.

Ideally, we should return to our huts.

Of course we have a vitamin D deficiency.

Men usually prefer light-skinned women.

They think that light skin is beautiful.

Take a look at the actresses.

Aishwarya Rai.

Trisha.

Sneha.

They all have really light skin.

But now even they are not light enough.

So they bring in Amy Jackson.

A white woman to play a Tamil.

How stupid is that?

Are we still influenced by the Colonial period

and the era of slavery?

Back in the day when the whites held the power.

Our people who worked in the fields

were of course darker.

So people think about social class,

and maybe that still influences us.

What are you doing with me now?

I'm doing the full facial treatment.

But without bleaching.

Without bleaching, yes.

I'm halving the face.

On one side I'll make you up how I think you should look.

On the other side I'll make you a bit lighter.

The way Tamil women want it.

So darker or completely light...

which is more attractive?

I'd like to see what people here in Switzerland think.

See you next week.

Until then, adios!

Hope you like this video.

Once more.

Sorry, I'll start again.

Press record.

Why Travelers Love Staying in Hostels - Duration: 1:56.

My name is James Coffee and I am from

Melbourne, Australia.

My name is Elena and I'm from Russia .

I'm Izzy and I'm from

Tunbridge Wells in England.

My name is Marie, and I come from France.

I love staying in hostels.

It's one of my favorite ways to travel because you meet

so many people.

I always travel by myself

so if I feel social

then I can meet people. If I feel like

I don't want to see anybody, I want to stare at the building for

half an hour because

it's beautiful, then I can do that. So I do it for flexibility.

You never know where it's going to take you.

Sometimes I've meet people at a hostel

and ended up just dropping all my plans and

going traveling with them

it opens up a lot of opportunities

especially if you're a solo traveler.

Share with the other guests, and talk,

and

not feeling alone.

Nice vibe,

clean and tidy,

and just

the people I think make it

a better place, a better hostel.

It inspires you. You see so many places,

see some new people you're like, "Oh wow!

I definitely want to know this thing." I want to

kind of learn.

You understand the gap between what you have and what you could have in

your life as a person or as a citizen.

Meeting some lifelong friends or,

you know,

seeing some stuff that you otherwise wouldn't

have seen.

It's all about experience, I guess.

Try it, because it's a good adventure!
