why to use clingfilm - Duration: 1:56.

and today I wanted to talk to you about

treating a burn and using clingfilm on it.

So most of us know that if we get a burn

we need to cool it with nice cool water,

that's going to help stop it hurting

and it's going to help take the heat out of the burn.

What we then need to do,

is cover it up with clingfilm.

And there are three reasons we cover it with clingfilm.

It's really important to treat even little burns

with clingfilm because actually, there is a benefit.

So the first reason we use clingfilm is that it won't stick.

So if I've got a burn here on my wrist

and it had blistered

and we covered it up with a bandage,

what would happen is that bandage would stick

to the fluid from the blisters;

where clingfilm won't stick.

The second reason is that it's going to block out air

and that's quite important

because by blocking out air,

we block out bacteria.

And that's very important

because burns do tend to get infected very easily,

so we want to block out as much bacteria as possible.

And the third reason is

that it actually helps to stop the pain.

So you have probably had a burn

where you've cooled it,

and you think, yeah that's a lot better

and then you take your hand out

and it just starts to throb; ow, ow, ow.

And it does that throbbing

because when it got burned,

the nerve endings were damaged

and now they're on high alert

and as air hits them,

it sends a pain signal.

If we take clingfilm and cover that up

air doesn't hit it,

so it doesn't send a pain signal.

So it actually helps to stop that throbbing.

So it's really worth treating your little burns

at home with clingfilm

even when they might not need any medical treatment.

There are negative associations

when Tamils talk about dark skin.

That's right.

In our culture, dark skin is not considered beautiful.

And that's not just the case among Tamils.

I have friends from the Philippines who also avoid the sun.

The Chinese and Japanese do likewise.

What I find really weird are the tricks people use to lighten their skin tone.

You always have an umbrella with you.

You're always in the shade.

Sometimes I cross the street to be on the shady side.

It's really embarrassing,

but people always talking about skin colour had an effect on me.

"Light is good and dark is bad."

White peopletry to become darker, especially in summer.

They sunbathe for hours.

I went on a beach holiday once and only once.

I got a sun allergy.

They risk getting skin cancer just to have darker skin.

nd we're just as stupid at the other end of the scale.

We smear bleaching shizzle on our faces in order to have lighter skin

although it's carcinogenic.

These are various bleaching creams,

to make your skin a bit lighter.

But then I can't see a single fruit.

Glycerine, sterates, sodium acid phosphate.

You're putting acid on your face.

Along with a bit of colour and perfume.

I just want to say, you apply it once or twice a year.

That's not good at all.

We Tamils don't spend a lot of time in the sun.

So we have less vitamin D.

But the melanine that makes our skin dark

protects us from the sun.

Then we're like vampires.

Ideally, we should return to our huts.

Of course we have a vitamin D deficiency.

Men usually prefer light-skinned women.

They think that light skin is beautiful.

Sneha.

They all have really light skin.

But now even they are not light enough.
