Hey guys, it's Looch, and I'm with my friend Jesse.
Now, Jesse's not a native Minnesotan.
You moved here three years ago?
JESSE: Mm-hm.
MARY: OK.
And we want to know what your first impression was of the Minnesota State Fair.
JESSE: What stuck out to me the most the first year was definitely the dairy queens.
MARY: Yes!
JESSE: The sculptures of heads from butter.
MARY: Yes.
And do you think that that would be an honor?
Like, would that be something you'd like to sit for?
JESSE: I would love that!
MARY: Yeah!
Actually that would be kind of cool.
OK, and overwhelming amount of people eating, and that didn't freak you out at all?
JESSE: No, I love it.
Thanksgiving's my favorite holiday!
MARY: Ok, good!
And then if you had to rank things, are you an animal person, a rides person?
JESSE: I would say Seed Art is my number one.
MARY: That's good!
JESSE: I love that.
I think I want to submit next year.
Seed Art, the vegetable 4-H competition, I love that.
And this year, I saw the draught horses with their really ornate carriages behind them.
I loved that.
MARY: Yeah.
OK, I worked at the Fair, including this job and prevous radio jobs, like 20 years in a
row, every day, so I don't have to go out to the Fair!
And I'm actually kind of OK with that, but one thing that I used to marvel at was that
the MPR booth is right behind the KARE 11 barn, and about four o'clock every day, you'd
hear this scream like Shea Stadium, 1969, the Beatles, and you'd think, "Is Bono being
helicoptered in?"
And no, it was for the weather guy.
It's like he's a rock star.
And it's very charming and Midwestern and people are very happy to go out to the Fair
to watch TV.
That's something I've never gotten my head around.
OK, so this year, you went once just so far.
JESSE: Yeah.
MARY: OK, and did you have specific things that you knew that you wanted to do?
JESSE: I knew I wanted the dill pickle beer.
MARY: OK.
How was that?
JESSE: Great.
I love it.
MARY: OK.
JESSE: I watched the log rolling.
MARY: Log rolling?
What is that?
JESSE: You stand on a log— MARY: Oh!
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah!
Lumberjacky stuff.
JESSE: Yeah.
And I stopped by the butter princesses to say hi.
And the birthing center!
MARY: Yaaaassss!
JESSE: I love the birthing center!
It's so cute!
MARY: Yes!
The Miracle of Birth barn is a highlight, too, because there's always one 7,000-pound
sow just laying on her side, like, "Oh god, make this be over."
... Again, the State Fair to an outsider's eye, do you feel now you're becoming one of
us?
JESSE: I'm in!
MARY: You're in!
JESSE: Yeah.
I know the appropriate amount of cheese curds to eat without getting sick.
MARY: Very fine!
OK, so there, you've got Jesse, she's sort of a fresh set of eyes to the Minnesota State
Fair.
If you were like me, though, and a person who maybe wasn't in love with crowds, is there
one place that you think anyone could go that they wouldn't have a panic attack?
JESSE: You know, actually, the Coliseum where I watched the horses.
It's usually pretty chill in there.
It's shaded, not too loud.
I like it in there.
MARY: OK.
The Great Minnesota Get-Together ends on Labor Day.
