Past Today: Why Conflicts Endure - Duration: 2:38.

Past Today was about how past conflicts endure today across the world - South Korea, Mexico, Colombia,

Afghanistan, Pakistan... class kind of felt like a mix of

World History, Anthropology,

Lit, Art History...

I'm from Korea and the very first thing I stepped into the classroom was Professor Serrano read the poem called

Jindalleggot 진달래꽃 (Azaleas - Korean Poem). I kind of felt proud

of my country.

Right when I would walk into class, I would always see

like a funny video playing. I never had a class like this.

The class is taught by Richard Serrano. He would

entertain the class. He is by far my favorite teacher at the school. Physical depictions of him - he's about six feet,

he wears a lot of purple.

He is one of the most amazing professors I've ever had.

He delivers Oscar-worthy lectures. He is so passionate about his subject.

He invites his students to have extra credit dinners with him and extra credit dancing classes.

It was one of the first classes where I really got to know my professor well. I also got to learn more about my classmates and it felt like more of a community.

Everyone has experiences and stories to share.

The most interesting point

I think that I found out through this course is how similar we actually are. No matter which background you come from,

how you really do go through a lot of the same issues. We can all relate to the same ideas.

I never really had a chance to go out and experience different countries and different cultures.

So this is my first time I guess really being immersed into what different parts of the world were going through.

I also got to learn about major conflicts around the world. I had no idea they existed.

I think this is very important for people to know and be aware of.

Class made me realize I never have to stop learning.

There's just so much of the world left to explore and discover. And Professor Serrano wanted to impart to his students

don't let anyone ever tell you no. Don't let anyone ever stop you from doing what you want to do.

Take your time at Rutgers and do something wonderful.

Every student at Rutgers should take this class in particular.

The class was at first something that I was just squeezing in and shortly it became one of the best college experiences that I've had so far.

you can think of me as that part of you who's not afraid

to go deep inside to find out the real reasons why

and while you get in touch to that deep part within you

get ready for the hunt why do we smile

try to think about all the reasons to smile

it can be very simple maybe you just feel like it

yes you just feel like smiling maybe it's just a good day

maybe it's just amazing weather maybe it's amazing sunrise yeah

just there in the back another reason to smile

you can go as simple as possible maybe you're just

having fun yes just having fun and you know what

maybe you were just reminded of a time that you had fun

we can deep into the past yes remember the deeper you go

the deeper you go the more powerful you become

yes so let's go deep into the past think about the last time

try to think about the last time you had a stranger smiles at you

how did it feel when I think about it

I had a day I was walking the street I was pretty down things

weren't going my way but then someone smiled at me

I felt it deep inside it lift me up think about how powerful a smile

can be maybe that's another reason to smile

lift someone else up think about it there're people

that are on the verge of sometimes even committing suicide

yes I'm serious but then when you give them a smile

you can lift them up you can give them a little bit of hope

yes hope that people care that's another reason to smile

maybe to see someone without a smile and

that's a good time to give them yours another reason

the more reasons the better because you remember

the more reasons the why will get stronger and when the

why gets stronger the how gets easier

it will be easier for us to smile it will become our habit

and then will feel better because sometimes many times

when we smile we just feel better which might be even

another reason maybe my personal reason I wanted to

share with you I can smile that's another reason

because I can because I can I will smile why not

many times it makes me feel good just makes me feel

when I don't feel good so that's another reason

when you don't feel good you can smile but be careful

it might work yes it might work

it might make you feel better you can try this one as well

and now I have an image in my mind yes

also gives me a reason to smile I think about my

nephew yeah he's smiling at me for the first time

think about a baby the last time a baby smiled

at you what a sweet image

another reason to smile just thinking about that image

in your mind so if you have more reasons why to smile

and spread that positivity in the world

and also within you by the way

I was just smiling yesterday because I accomplished something

maybe between you and yourself you were proud of yourself

you thought about whoa I did that and then you smile

you were proud of yourself let yourself be proud of yourself

and put a tag on it as a smile that's another reason

being proud of ourselves as a reason to smile

so if more reasons why to smile share them below so we

can all as a community and also as individuals

can get our why stronger and stronger because when the

why gets stronger the how gets easier in everything

Why do we shake hands?

Oh, I know why people shake hands.

People started shaking hands a long time ago

to see if you were a good or a bad person.

People believed that other people

had good and bad spirits inside of them

and the only way to find out

was by shaking someone's hand.

If their hand was warm,

they were thought to be safe and healthy.

If their hand was cold,

they were rather to be sick or not to be trusted.

Even though we know that's not true,

we still shake hands today,

just because of tradition -

unless you're sick or something.

You don't want to spread germs!

[audience cheers]

Okay, so you're saying

people started shaking hands

to see if someone was good or evil.

Could be true,

but we've still got to hear from Vanilla Shake.

Vanilla Shake, why do you think we shake hands?

Well, back in the olden days,

when there were wars and battles all the time,

people shook hands as a sign of peace.

If you came across a stranger

who was swinging a sword around like some medieval ninja,

you may have thought they were going to attack you,

so if that person meant you no harm,

they would put their weapon away

and show you their empty hand,

and you would show them your empty hand,

and then you'd shake hands

as a sign of peace.

Basically, people do it today

because we did it back then.

So, kids, can you guess who told the truth?

Was it Strawberry Shake

with her story about detecting evildoers?

with his story about the peace offering?

we like to be scared because it satisfies a deep primal need in us we

came up on the savanna with everything wanting to bite into the back of our

skull or plunder our insides so we came up for millions of years hardwired for

there to be teeth in the darkness that want us and nowadays the world is kind

of antiseptic we shine our lights into all the corners but we're still

hardwired to expect that rush that visceral thrill and for that reason we

turn again and again to horror because horror satisfies that it gives us the

rush of teeth in the darkness it gives us the sense that we're not safe and

though that feels unsettling in one sense in another sense it makes us feel

more human

Facebook has millions of advertisers, and making millions of advertisers happy

with only one solution, in my opinion, from a product standpoint it's simply

unfeasible. You can't have everything on the same solution. And even if it is

Facebook, they have limited resources. That's why they created this ecosystem

and it's been really successful because for for a very long time FMPs have been

building different solutions on different parts of the advertising

system and they are adding value. So FMP's are not replacements for what

Facebook does, they are complimentary for what Facebook is doing.

Facebook has Facebook Marketing Partners, the ecosystem.

They are building technologies and solutions on top of the Facebook infrastructure

using the Facebook API. Some FMPs are building solutions for the ad-delivery part,

some are for measurement, there are creative partners. So the whole idea is

Facebook is so big and so complex. What Facebook has been

doing is they want to make sure they have a good infrastructure that can

cover different cases. And they have amazing free tools. As managers, you can

use it for everything on Facebook. But if you want to go deeper

into specific functions or specific verticals, we are a vertical FMP so we

build a platform only for traveler brands and we only work with traveler

brands. And the idea is travel has very different problems, for example. They are

dealing with seasonality, they are dealing with rates and availability. It is

a very different path to purchase when you compare to eCommerce, for

example. That's why we are building solutions for travel. And that's how we

are adding value on top of Facebook.
