Fire at Restaurant in Upscale Mumbai Building Kills at Least 14

NEW DELHI — A fire tore through an upscale commercial building on Friday in Mumbai, India's financial capital, killing at least 14 people, including women attending a birthday party at a rooftop restaurant, a hospital official said.

At least 19 other people were injured.

The blaze broke out around 12:30 a.m.

at the Kamala Mills Compound, a multistory building in Mumbai's trendy Lower Parel neighborhood.

The refurbished industrial building housed the offices of several news media companies and swanky restaurants.

The police said the fire started on an upper floor before quickly engulfing the building's rooftop restaurants, 1 Above and Mojo's Bistro, where more than 100 people had gathered, including a large group of women in their 20s and 30s attending a birthday party.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene.

In addition to the fatalities, at least 19 other people were injured.

"The entire rooftop was engulfed in flames before anybody had a chance to react," Sulbha K.G.

Arora, who was at one of the restaurants, told NDTV, an Indian news channel.

"It was like a stampede situation.

People were running all over me.".

By the time firefighters gained control of the blaze in the early morning hours on Friday, three men and eleven women had died from suffocation, a hospital official said, includinga 28-year-old woman celebrating her birthday.

Many of the bodies were found near a bathroom where some of the women had fled.

Witnesses said the restaurants lacked fire extinguishers, and that 1 Above had an awning made of bamboo that accelerated the fire's spread.

Bottle-blond gourmand Guy Fieri is closing his absurd Guy's American Kitchen and Bar in Times Square. The 500-seat super-restaurant will shut its doors after a last hurrah on Sunday, according to Eater. com.

When it launched in 2012, the restaurant — which served Fieri's famous "Donkey Sauce," among other enduringly regrettable items — was met with a critical reception frostier than Fieri's tips. But it has since been a sizzling hit with tourists.

In a statement to Page Six, Fieri didn't give a reason for the closure, saying only that he is proud of the 5 ¹/₂-year run.

But it could be because the restaurant couldn't match the culinary virtuosity of 44th Street rival Bubba Gump Shrimp Co.

Or it could be that, as one Yelp reviewer said while imploring diners to go literally anywhere else in the neighborhood, "the Guitar Center may actually have better service and food.

Alas, hungry Times Square visitors will now just have to make do with triple-Michelin-starred Le Bernardin.

Eyewitness: Flames spread in a matter of seconds.

One diner who was present when the fire started told CNN that he and his dining companion noticed a small fire in the corner of the restaurant, but he had assumed staff would bring it under control.

However, he had underestimated the speed at which it would spread.

Before anyone had time to react in a matter of seconds the flames had spread very rapidly and engulfed the entire rooftop, customer Sulbha KG Arora said.

There was no time for anyone to try and bring the fire under control, the only thing possible to do was to try and escape from there.

He said there were around 100 people in 1 Above when the flames spread, and in a little bit of a stampede diners rushed towards the entrance.

He says he was pushed down in the melee.

By the time I tried to get up, the whole roof above me was coming down in flames, he said.

He and his companion, an old college friend, instead escaped to the kitchen where staff helped them locate and exit through a fire escape door.

There were quite a few flights of stairs we had to run down and as we kept running we could literally feel the fire chasing us because we kept feeling the heat behind us, he said.
