Hi! I'm Borja The Gay Explorer and a few months ago I decided to quit my job to
travel the world and become a travel blogger. But there's a plot twist, I'll be
going on a date with the guy in each city where he'll show me around take
me to his favorite spots and discuss LGBTQ+ issues.
Did you ever dream of traveling the world, of learning from people's life stories
and of having a great time while doing so?
Then come and join me on this amazing journey.
Hi there, I'm Borja The Gay Explorer and we're gonna go and explore Toronto! I'm here at
the Barcelona Airport so we still have a nine hour and a half flight so yeah we
still have some time to chill and everything in the meantime we're gonna
grab a the bite at the airport, walk around and relax before we settle on the plane.
So let's see what's up.
You see this huge line of people moving behind?
It means it's boarding time. Here we go Toronto!
I'm actually at the Eaton Toronto Centre which is beautiful and I'm waiting for
Kevin that after we're gonna go for a date somewhere else
but first I wanted to tour you around here. Look at this and then it looks like a
gallery, with the ceiling and it's beautiful. Anyway so I'm
gonna do a little bit of shopping maybe buy something nice for the date
and have a good cup of coffee and then go over there.
I see him, he's over there. I'm a bit nervous, but I think it's gonna be fun. He's a very cool guy from what I saw...
Hey guys my name is Kevin and I have a Airbnb property management
company here in Toronto. I am just a wee bit older than Borja but I'm not gonna
say how old I am. Is that okay? Can I get away with that? Okay, I am born and raised
in Toronto, lived here my whole life. I love this city, I love everything that
has to offer. I also love to travel but for right now I am looking forward to
going on a date with Borja and see how it turns out.
so that's it. I enjoy working out I do yoga twice a week and yeah just enjoy
living life and going out with friends having some drinks you know getting a
little bit into trouble once in a while but I'm pretty pretty good okay. Guys
look forward to the date. Talk to you soon, I'll let you know how it goes.
Hey! I'm good and you? This is Kevin
- Nice to see you, did you find it okay? - This is beautiful!
Our little Times Square from New York called Dundas Square and there is lots of fun
stuff to do in the city so.. - What are we gonna do? - Big surprise, I can't tell you right now
Yonge street is the longest street in the world. Its starts all the way from our water front and goes hundreds of kilometers north.
So we are not gonna walk a hundred kilometers because I can't do it, you probably could. But we're gonna head
towards the gay village so you can see it okay. - Okay, wait, are we gay?
- Well I don't know I was told you are. - Maybe just a bit
- Just a little bit? Okay, okay, that's okay this will be for you I'm not gay but I'm just trying.
- Oh okay thank you!
- So behind us is Sailor and Woody's, these are the two most famous Bars in Toronto.
- Are we gonna go there after? - Of course we are, you need your alcohol, you're Spanish - Yes, I need it and I'm over 21
- I hope you have your ID, because you look kinda young. I think people are thinking you're my son. - I was told the other day
like am I a twink am I not, what am I? What is this?
and I was actually told this new term called twunk which is a mix between like twink
and a hunk. - oh I like that. - So I'm a twunk!
- What are the rules again? No sex? - Yes. - Okay, then we can't go into places like that please.
So we are here in the famous very historic famous 519
Community Park in Toronto and there's a lot of history here candlelight vigils
all the time and here we are coming to the AIDS Memorial of Toronto.
- It's pretty unbelievable the amount of names here. - And they have it by year as well
- It's very touching. - It is touching and you know what we never forget these are
the people that have made the community what it is today so we will always
remember and give thanks to everything they've done to help us and and all of
the activists in this community around the world it's a big deal we were able
to walk free around the city of Toronto because of people like this and I'm sure
from where you're from - it's the same thing it's a really big deal.
I grew up I didn't know anybody who was gay, so I kind had of all my friends you know a lot of them if
they were gay they would say that they had known someone in high school or
their best buddy and I thought oh my god that's so amazing and I knew of people
who were gay but I didn't know of people to hang out with, so I remember my first
year of university after my first year, I gained some confidence and
I thought to myself you know I can do this so I went to a place called the 519
community center okay yes right yeah and I wrote in my calendar on a certain day
it was a May 13th I remember well, it was a Tuesday
a Tuesday night because it was a newcomers night for people who were new to
the gay scene and I remember writing in my calendar in big letters "BEGIN LIFE"
and on that night I went to the newcomers group of the gay and lesbian
sort of chapter and the 519 and I remember going in there I
remember the feeling driving around a few times the block being a little bit
nervous, parking the car and sort of going in and just not knowing to expect
and recognizing that everybody was just like me. - Do you feel that in Canada or
maybe in Toronto specific like the gay community is accepted or like we have
like how do you feel being gay in Toronto? - Yeah I think I think it's very different
today than it was back then and I think there it is very accepting but you know
I mean said that, there's a lot of people cultures and different backgrounds where
it is not you know sort of my experience and I'm sure there's still a stigma
depending where you live and you know who your experiences, where you're from in the world.
- Anyways, we do have a little bit more from our date. - Ok, yes it's not over yet!
- No it's not over yet, it's like a full-day date
Yeah, I mean I decided to do full-day dates just because it allows us
to get to know each a little bit better and then I've we see each
other in moments of stress. - Yeah and who wants to give this up for you know too
long, so I'm having him for the full day. - Anyway so let's go? - Okay sounds good!
- Can we add two to our date? - Yeah!
- So there's over a million people that come every year for the parade. It's the second largest I believe after NY.
- This is a grocery store, a huge grocery
store used to be the old Toronto Maple Leaf Gardens, where the Leafs played
and you see here - OMG! It's huge!
- I don't know if you can see it, yeah, you can see a bit.. damn I could spend
like my whole day here, I love food - What's your favorite food? - Cum? *laughs* No I'm kidding!
- I don't know if we are going to put this or edit it out. - I dont know what section that's in
Loblaws, we can ask at the front desk.
So we're done with the game and unfortunately we lost.
- Yes, Blue Jays lost, woo - And the New York Yankees won but anyways it was my first game
It was a great experience, absolutely loved it. - He did the wave. - I did the wave and while
I was doing the wave my iPhone fell from my pocket and it broke.
- The wave cost him his iphone - That was not a great experience but anyways.
We did the seventh-inning stretch. - As well and then we also drank a little bit,
but it was a great game, I liked it. It was my first baseball game. - Yes and not his last, go Jays!
So guys we made it out of the Blue Jays game despite losing, but anyways it was
still equally great and we come now to the end of our date *Kevin sobs*
But I think it was great! - Yes, I had a lot of fun. - You enjoyed it?
- I did it was very very fun - I did enjoy it, I got a proper tour of Toronto, we were
able to explore the city, we explored a few issues here and there.
- Yes we did, it was a great day! Yeah, so I hope you will come back to Toronto.
You're always my guests here in the city and I will come visit you in Barcelona.
- Yes, you're always welcome there! - Bye bye - Take care
So, this is the end of our date now, but it was great and I
had a lot of fun but there's more to come, there's more explorations happening.
I'm Borja The Gay Explorer and there's lot more to do together. See you soon :)
