Day of the Dead has a lot of iconography.

The monarch, in particular. And so, this little creature... it's telling us something

My name is Luis Fitch. And we're in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I'm a creative director and fine artist.

I started drawing and painting, like any other kid, when I was 4 or 5.

And so I continued with my fine art.

For me, that's really, I don't see the boundaries. It's really what I'm focusing in the last 20 years.

It's something that I'm always experimenting [with].

I draw inspiration mainly from Mexico. Or any indigenous group from around the world.

I think that the work that they do is very unique and pure.

It's that texture and that color and that patina that these old walls have.

This whole inspiration of Day of the Dead. It wasn't until I went to Oaxac

I just started collecting books doing research and going to the libraries. And little by little I find out that it was an incredible celebration.

The way that I particularly [celebrate], if I'm doing something for my grandfather.

I would definitely try find some pictures of him.

And then he liked quesadilla, and some dishes that my grandma used to do.

And then invite friend or family members.

In this case, he liked tequila. So we'd serve tequila to him, then everybody drinks tequila.

So it's a really nice way of remembering him.

Day of the Dead has a lot of iconography

The marigold. It's a flower that we use

It's one of the flowers that you can put all over the floor to welcome your ancestors to your house.

The butterfly. It's another symbol. It's about migration.

Once they start, they have to pass through the Great Lakes.

And a lot of them pass through the state of Minnesota.

Symbolically, this little insect that is so delicate, it's just incredible.

So the Minnesota Lottery approached me with this idea that they wanted to do something for Day of the Dead.

And that's why I wanted to work with this Day of the Dead Minnesota Lottery scratch [game.]

Because I know that some of the money goes back to the natural causes.

So the idea was really really interesting. And once we started brainstorming, it's very representative of Day of the Dead and my work.

And so I wanted to incorporate those two worlds.

My personal work, and let's give some money back to those little butterflies.
