Minnesota NRCS Pollinator Habitat CRP with Producer Brad Cords - Duration: 2:56.

This farm has been in my family since 1933 when my grandfather bought it. We

got a hundred and eight acres that were in cropland. A couple years ago we were

looking for options as far as either we're going to tile it, sell it, or do

something else. And we came across the pollinator program and it sort of fit

into what we wanted to do. It was a wet farm and it probably was going to need

quite a bit of tiling and we avoided that with decent payment for it. And

working with the NRCS people has been real smooth. It went really well. I

called to find out what it was all going to need for when we were going to

need to plant and they answered all my questions and it was really smooth. It

went really well, what we needed for what size of tractor and all that kind

of stuff. The reason we put the field into the program was, one was that

it was a little bit better rate than what we were getting for rent, and also

two to help out the insects and pollinators and the bees and all that.

Well what we have planted in the field here is about 15 different kinds

of flowers and three different kinds of grasses. I think the flowers are coming

through a lot better now than they've started out. With the grasses started out

a little stronger to start with. We see a lot of bees and we see a lot of

butterflies out in the field and I think it's doing great for what the

intended purpose was. So you got to maintain some weeds. The thistles are an

issue and maybe timber weeds and stuff like that. And on the the fourth and

fifth year we're going to burn half of it one year and half the other because

of the the size of it. And then I'm assuming after that, after you

burn, the thistles kind of come on a little strong so we'll have to maintain

that. But it's not bad. Once it gets established and thick I think it will

drowned out most of the thistles and keep them down. At least keep them from

from seeding out. We are in the program for ten years and

we're seven years to go. And we'll see what happens when it comes up again. If

they want to continue that program or not, I would be definitely in for putting

it right back into it if again, if it was available.
