What's New in Mastercam 2019: Model Prep Align Functions - Duration: 6:53.

In Mastercam 2019, we have added three functions to the Model Prep tab:

Align to Plane, Align to Face, and Align to Z.

With Align to Plane you can quickly prepare a solid body for machining by positioning it in line with a specific plane.

Simply choose the top face and an edge on the solid that you want to align.

In this demonstration, we will align the bottom front edge of the stamp to the Top plane so that it aligns to the table.

Once you have selected the top face and edge of the solid, select the Transform to plane option in the function panel and choose the plane.

The preview lets you see how the stamp will align to the table.

Select from one of the ten origin points to anchor your solid.

In this demonstration, we will use this origin to center the bottom of the stamp to the top of the table.

To save the transformation, click OK.

If you need to include additional geometry when transforming a solid to a plane, use the Additional Geometry option to select wireframe and other entities.

In this example, we will include wireframe geometry when we move the solid.

Follow the same selection procedure to select the solid, and then click Select to return to the graphics window for the additional geometry.

We will use a Quick Mask here to quickly select the wireframe.

Click OK to finish the transformation.

The Align to Plane function makes it easy to create a new Working Coordinate System from a solid so you can align solids to entities that must remain in a particular orientation.

This time, we will first create a custom WCS from the solid and set its origin at the bottom-center of the part.

In a new operation, we will align the table to the new WCS.

Select the top face and the front edge of the machine table.

Select the Transform to plane option to align the table to the WCS you just created.

Set the origin so the preview shows that the table is appropriately positioned.

Click OK to finish the transformation.

Align to Face is the renamed and more powerful version of the Position function, which was introduced in Mastercam X9.

As in the previous version of this function, you can still easily mate the selected faces of two solids, like we see here.

The latest version of Align to Face now lets you not only mate faces, but also quickly align the edges of the solids that you mate.

In this demonstration, we will align an edge of the solid we are moving so that it is parallel to another selected edge on our target body.

After selecting the face on the solid that will be moved, Mastercam prompts you to create a reference edge.

Notice how the X axis of the gnomon aligns to this reference edge.

In a similar fashion, Mastercam prompts you to select a face then a reference edge on the target body.

The preview lets you see how the reference edges will align parallel to each other when the selected faces are mated.

Click OK to finish the transformation.

Previously known as Align Solid Body, you can now find the Align to Z function on both the Turning tab and in the Model Prep tab in the Layout group.

Continue to use this function to move or align a solid body to the Z axis of a selected Cplane.

Select a cylindrical face or edge of a solid body and either create a custom WCS, or transform the solid body to the Z axis of a selected plane, like we do here.

In this case, we will need to reverse the Z orientation of the solid.

Align to Z is particularly useful when mounting a solid in to a lathe chuck.

New in Mastercam 2019 is the ability to select additional entities to move with the solid.

If you need to include additional geometry along with the solid, use the Additional Geometry option to select wireframe and other entities.

In this example, we will include wireframe geometry when we move the solid.

Follow the same selection procedure to select the solid, and then click Select to return to the graphics window for the additional geometry.

Use a Quick Mask to quickly select the wireframe.

Click OK to complete the transformation.

The new align functions in the Model Prep tab, Align to Plane, Align to Face, and Align to Z, help you easily and accurately transform your solids.

What's New in Mastercam 2018 Machine Simulations - Duration: 3:37.

Hello, my name is Ken Fortier, Product Owner for the Integration team.

Mastercam 2018 brings a number of additions and improvements to the Mastercam Simulator.

A third tab has been added, giving you access to Simulation.

You can now backplot, verify, and run simulation, all within Mastercam Simulator.

The interface itself has been modified to look and feel like the main Mastercam interface with similar icons, tools arranged for workflow, and a floating toolbar.

The ability to add bookmarks adds power and saves time when using Mastercam Simulator.

You create bookmarks manually, or automatically based on items such as operation or tool change, tool inspection, or specified increments.

Bookmarks allow you to return to specific locations within the playback, showing you the in-process stock at that specific time, without having to restart the playback from the beginning.

These additions and improvements increase your efficiency and capabilities when using Mastercam Simulator.

The functionality in Mastercam Simulator has been enhanced to extend your ability to check and present your toolpaths before sending them to the machine.

A modified version of Mastercam's Machine Simulation product is now included and available from within Mastercam Simulator.

Select Verify from the Toolpaths Manager to open Mastercam Simulator.

Click Simulation on the Home tab to view the part on your machine.

While in Simulation mode, click the Simulation tab to adjust what to display during playback.

You can use clipping planes, save the stock as an STL, or use Collision Checking.

The same options that are in Verify are available in Simulation.

Set your preferences for Simulation mode from within Mastercam in the newly designed Simulator Options dialog box.

Your preferences will be reflected the next time you open Mastercam Simulator.

The Save Presentation option preserves your settings and layout of your Simulator session and allows you to view the simulation on any computer, even if it does not have Mastercam installed.

Simply select Save Presentation on the Home tab to save an executable file.

Create bookmarks to refer to specific points during Verify, Backplot, or Simulation.

Use Automatic Bookmark to insert bookmarks at certain locations such as a tool change or operation change.

The bookmarks you create display on the playback bar.

You can also add bookmarks directly from the playback bar.

Select any bookmark to display the part as it appears at that moment in the simulation process.

because it is very useful especially on big groups

What's New in Mastercam 2019: Accelerated Finishing - Duration: 2:56.

In Mastercam 2019, Accelerated Finishing™ has been extended to support new circle-segment tool geometries.

In addition to barrel form tools, Mastercam now supports lens form and taper form tools.

Circle-segment tool profiles include multiple radius segments as well as large-radius segments on cutting edges, which can deliver faster results with a better finish.

A lens form tool includes a large radius segment across the tool tip in addition to the smaller corner radii.

The large radius segment lets the tool engage more of the stock in shallow areas of your part, resulting in smaller cusps and increased stepover.

Taper form tools include four circular segments.

In addition to the ball tip and the radii at the top and bottom of the taper, the tapered segment itself is a large-radius circular segment.

This lets the tool more effectively engage part walls and steep areas of your part, resulting in much more efficient multiaxis toolpaths.

Compare the results of machining the same feature with a traditional ball endmill and a taper form mill.

When you machine this area with a ball endmill, you see that you need a very small stepover, resulting in many cutting passes.

The maximum stepover is only 0.003 of an inch.

When you machine the same part feature with the taper form mill, you can see that the tool engages the part much more effectively, resulting in significantly fewer cutting passes.

The stepover between each pass is 0.025 of an inch, dramatically reducing the machining time.

Even with a larger stepover, circular segment tool geometry results in smaller cusps for a better finish.

The more efficient cutting passes also greatly improve tool life.

The second thing that I have are some earphones and this is an essentials for me

Especially when I take the bus and go to a gym. The next thing in the small pocket... I have is a pen

Just a regular blue pen. Oh this probably like really random but

So yeah, that's all that I have in there. Moving on to the main pocket...

The first thing in the main pocket, I have a notebook

I just like to keep this in my bag [hesitation] 'cause I.. like to... jot down... ideas.. and notes

So I like to keep this in my bag because sometimes I have a lot of my mind, I like to write stuff down

and remember them.

The next thing that I have is

and then I have a water bottle and I cannot leave the house without a water bottle, I NEED to stay hydrated.

A charger - a phone charger, just a regular phone charger. The next thing that I have...

An EOS lip-balm stick and this is the peppermint or mint balm, I believe... and then I have a

Travel hairbrush and there used to be a mirror right here, but I broke it somehow...

What's New in Mastercam 2019: Power Surface - Duration: 3:10.

Power Surface is a new tool in Mastercam 2019 that lets you easily create surfaces from curves, and quickly fill gaps with properly shaped surfaces.

After you select Power Surface on the Surfaces tab, you select the curves needed to create a new surface.

You then use the Power Surface function panel to further edit the surface.

Use the Surface Settings options to modify the created surface.

For example, Use Normals controls the shape of the surface based on the selected option.

By changing Use Normals to CPlane, the created surface will be normal to the active construction plane, instead of using the normal vectors of the surrounding surfaces.

The results of the surface for both Use Normals options may not match the surface you intended to create.

You can use geometry to help constrain and limit the resulting surface.

The selected top chain limits how much the surface may expand from the selected geometry.

You can use Trim Inner to trim the created surface inside the selected curves to create a hole in the surface.

Use the Draw Settings to change how the surface looks in the graphics window.

You can change the settings to display the points of the created surface.

Or, you can display the vectors.

The Results section displays information about the created surface.

You cannot edit these parameters.

Select Calculate to view the Standard Deviation, Average Error, and Maximum Error.

These values help ensure that an accurate surface is constructed.

Chain Settings gives you additional control over the creation of the surface.

These options are helpful when working on very large or very small parts.

For example, you can change the maximum number of control points that will display on the selected chains by changing the Max Num Points parameter.

Power Surface lets you easily create surfaces from curves that are influenced by the adjoining surfaces.

What did ANCIENT Sloths Actually Look Like? | Summer of Sloths - Duration: 2:20.

- In 1797 Thomas Jefferson described the bones

of what he thought was a massive lion found in Virginia.

He called it megalonyx or great claw based

on fossils like this.

Early paleontologists later correctly identified

this as a ground sloth.

What did these animals actually look like?

Although sometimes scientists get lucky

and find cave drawings made by ancient ancestors,

we usually have to rely on soft tissue preservation

which lucky for us can be found in the NHMLA collection.

This is a piece of ground sloth's skin

collected from a dry cave in Nevada in 1930.

It shows us that like most mammals

these creatures had hair.

Their very course brown hair would have been necessary

for surviving in the ice age.

When it comes to their body,

ground sloths had a lot of unique features.

Let's take a closer look at this Shasta Ground Sloth.

The smallest of the ground sloths here at La Brea.

Now this animal here, if you notice,

doesn't look too much like their modern day relatives.

Unlike the small short faces of tree sloths,

these creatures had more elongated heads

allowing them to pick certain parts of plants.

They actually had a double set of ribs.

These sternal ribs that elongated

and broadened the body cavity.

Further on, this massive pelvis, tail,

and vertebral structure supported a lot of weight

as they reared up on those hind legs.

Then those massive claws that you see in the front

and the back would have been useful for things

like taking bark off of a tree,

digging a hole, as a back scratcher,

definitely for protection against massive hunters

of the ice age.

Lastly they had these very interesting feet

rotated inward.

Pronated feet like this allowed them

to better pivot themselves and support their movement

as they reared up on both legs.

However, when they were walking normally,

it also meant that they would wobble.

When you add all these features together,

very very strange slightly adorable animal

comes into view and it might have looked

a little something

something like this.

We'll never know what these animals are actually like

but when we study their fossils and compare them

to extants or living animals today.

Our view of the past gets just a little bit clearer.
