Hot Chicken Takeover is a fast casual restaurant chain growing out of central Ohio.
Many of the men and women that are employed with Hot Chicken Takeover have been affected
by incarceration or a criminal record in the past.
When I started Hot Chicken Takeover, about seven months ago, I was homeless,
didn't have a license, didn't have a vehicle.
Just in a few short months, I've been able to purchase a vehicle.
I have a driver's license, insurance.
A criminal record is often indicative of somebody's circumstance, not their character.
It's been nationally reported that one in three work-eligible Americans have a criminal record.
And so this isn't a small subset of our community, this is our community.
The infrastructure for our jobs is a little different than what people are used to.
We don't hire people into specific positions like front-of-house or back-of-house.
We hire everybody to work on our dish tank.
From there as people master positions alongside of some other training credentials,
they'll grow from a Crew 1 position to a Crew 2 to a Crew 3,
all the while earning additional income and incentive and benefits.
Our intention is to really empower them to be in charge of their own career path.
Most other places the training, it's basically just the job that's in front of you,
where at Hot Chicken it's more rounded.
You're going to get trained on the different aspects of the restaurant but through the things
that we do in the community and the charities that we work with,
it kind of trains you on how to treat people as well.
At the beginning of this year in 2017, Hot Chicken Takeover had 45 employees.
We're now approaching 175 employees through a lot of expansion of our concept.
Our annualized retention numbers right now are around 70 percent, which is,
depending on the statistics, three or four times better than our industry.
Most of us know what it's like to have doors slammed in our face.
There's no doubt in my mind that it contributes to the recidivism rate in this country.
It's a bond that most people will never experience.
We've been to some pretty dark places.
We consider ourselves a big family there.
Just like in a family you would want your family members to succeed and to move
on to the next level, that's kind of the approach that we take at Hot Chicken Takeover.
Hustle!
