Good afternoon.

Good, good afternoon.

I'm Representative Jim Davnie.

And I have the privilege of representing part of South Minneapolis in the Minnesota House.

Thank you.

Now yesterday was a bit of a proud papa moment for me as I watched hundreds of students from

my children's high school walk out in solidarity with their peers from Parkland.

It got just a little prouder when we could see my son's red hair above the rest of the

crowd.

Something about being six foot and red-haired makes him easy to pick out in a crowd.

But it occurred to me as I looked at those photos and I talked to him when he returned

home that instead of giving their teachers guns, let's give those children counselors

and social workers, let's give them arts and music.

Let's give them sports and drama.

Let's give them the tools to become whole people.

Because people who are connected to their community don't bring guns to school.

Let's raise our children to be the people we know they can be.

Thank you.

Esther, CHD Survivor to Walk in Minnesota's Red Dress Collection 2018 - Duration: 4:10.

(upbeat instrumental music)

- Still ahead here, this morning.

You're going to love this.

It's a fashion show for a good cause.

We are talking about Minnesota's Red Dress Collection

for the American Heart Association,

and next, right here at the studio,

you're going to meet a young girl

doing some fantastic work,

hoping to benefit from this event.

(upbeat instrumental music)

Welcome back, everybody.

Next weekend,

there is a very special fashion show happening.

It's going to raise money

for the American Heart Association.

It is Minnesota's Red Dress Collection.

This is a swanky event.

It's going to be happening at the Loews Hotel

in downtown Minneapolis, and this morning

we are so happy to have four year old Esther here,

who's going to be walking on the runway Saturday,

and she's here with her mom, Ashley Nelson.

Thank you both so much for being here early with us.

- Yep.

- So Ashley, let's start with you.

Esther has a heart defect.

Tell us a little bit about that

and how it's really affected your family.

- Yep, so we found out that she had her heart defect

when we went in for a jaundice check.

Otherwise she was born as a normal, healthy baby,

and we're very, very thankful for her jaundice

because otherwise her heart would have failed

within the first month of life,

so at 11 days old, we were admitted

to a children's hospital, where she had a little balloon

put in her heart, and it just opened up her valves

so the blood could go through a little easier.

- [Man] 11 days.

- 11 days.

- Wow.

- Yeah, so it was, with our first baby, that was a lot.

That was a lot to take,

but we were surrounded by a lot of family

and a lot of good friends, and that was really helpful.

- And since that, I mean that really had,

that was a moment for your family

and that's impacted you, and since then,

you've done these events to support the Heart Association.

Talk about that.

Why do you feel so compelled to help?

- Yes, we love the Heart Association just because

they are so helpful and they have brought us hope,

especially with like the Heart Walk and the Red Dress,

and just raising money for the Heart Association

just helps to bring new research for heart patients,

and it will make the process a lot easier for their life

in the future.

- We just saw Esther there on the screen, you know,

kind of dressed up, so that was cool.

So let's talk about this fashion show

that's going to be happening next.

Are you excited, Esther,

are you excited for the fashion show?

- Very.

- [Man] Ooh yeah, you get to dress up, right?

Tell me about what you're going to wear.

- A red dress.

- Oh yeah, well that sounds just perfect for the occasion.

So red shoes, too, I hear.

- Red shoes, too.

- Red everything, everybody.

This is good.

But so tell us a little bit about this event.

Like what are people going to experience

if they come out to that?

- Well they can come and it's just going to be

a lively, fun event, and there's going to be

a little concert at the end,

and there's going to be food,

and it's just a fun event that people can come to

and support the Heart Association,

and they'll get to see wonderful designers

present their dresses and suits,

and it's just, it's going to be a bubbly, live event.

- Look at that.

Yeah, you got a great venue, too there downtown.

Esther, last question goes to you.

What are you most excited about for that weekend?

What are you most excited about?

To get all dressed up?

- Get all dressed up.

- Yeah, and get your hair put up all nice?

That's going to be lovely.

Listen, both of you, thank you so much

for stopping by here at Five Witness News.

- Look at my hair right now.

- Your hair is cute right now too.

You don't really have to do much to it

because it already looks fantastic.

- Yeah.

- Can you give me a high five?

Alright.

Okay, well you're going to rock the runway next weekend.

Thank you for being here early with us.

- Yes, thank you.

- To talk about the event.

We want to run down the details for you one more time.
