Episode 168 // NEOs — Near Earth Objects

What is a NEO?

Near Earth Objects are really just that. These are celestial objects that come near to the Earth

and there are broadly two classes: Near Earth Asteroids and Comets.

Where do these objects come from?

The Near Earth Asteroids, they mostly come from the asteroid main belt

which is between Mars and Jupiter and it can happen that because of a collision

or because of an interaction with one of the planets, one of them falls down from its orbit in the main belt

to an orbit that brings it closer to the Sun and therefore closer to the Earth.

How many NEOs are there?

The Near Earth Objects, there are a few big ones, there are many more small ones

and there are many many more very small ones.

We know most of the big ones, big is one kilometre or more. For those that are 100 metres we know about 10 percent.

For those that are 10 metres we know less than one percent of them. So that's annoying, because an object that is 10 metres in diameter

on impact with the Earth, would release about the same energy as a Hiroshima bomb.

We are trying to characterise everything that is bigger than 20 or 50 or 100 metres

where we are at 10 percent now, so we still need to find 90 percent.

In terms of numbers, we know 10, 20 thousand of them and we are still missing 90 percent

so there is a lot of work to find them and to track them.

How can we search for them?

To discover Near Earth Objects, you need a super wide-angle telescope

and then you just scan the whole sky night after night in order to see everything that is moving.

The asteroids are moving, and so we have computer programmes that will find them

measure their position and from this position we can extrapolate the orbit and we refine the orbit

until we have an orbit that is good enough that we will not lose the asteroid again.

How often do impacts on Earth occur?

We know from history, and also looking at the Moon that there are many impacts.

On average a small one, which is like a few tens of metres, that happens every few years.

Bigger ones are fortunately less frequent because there are fewer of these objects.

Very big ones are even less frequent because there are very very few of them.

So if you take a very big one, a 15 or 20 kilometre asteroid, hitting the Earth, last one was 65 million years ago.

That was bad for the dinosaurs, and historically we see this kind of giant impact every 50 million years or so.

What we can do to predict impacts and what role does ESO's Very Large Telescope play?

To predict an impact with a Near Earth Asteroid, a Near Earth Object, you need to know its orbit very precisely.

And so to do that you need to measure the position of the object on the sky over and over and over.

It's difficult because many of these objects are small and they are not always near the Earth.

They can be on the other side of the Solar System.

The combination of their size and their distance makes them extremely faint

which means that most of the time the telescope that discovered them, which is a 2-metre class telescope

can observe them only for a few days and then they cannot see them anymore because they become too faint.

That's where the VLT, the 8-metre, big telescope, comes into play

because with the collecting power of the huge mirror we can see much fainter asteroids.

What is the VLT in particular used for?

Using the VLT, we refine the orbit of the Near Earth Object

the threatening ones that could have a collision, in order to make sure that the orbit is known

well enough either to rule out a collision, that's ideal, or to characterise a collision.

Is there anything we can do to prevent NEO impacts?

To protect ourselves from a Near Earth Object

we must know them, and prepare in advance before a collision.

So if we have enough time, 20 years or so, we can send a rocket and do something to the asteroid.

That can be nuke it; you know — atomic bomb — either to try to destroy it or to push it.

There are some more gentle ways. A cute way to do it is to spray paint the asteroid with bright white paint

because that will change the way it reflects the sunlight and that can be sufficient to push it away from its orbit.

Or you could also land a small rocket on the asteroid and let this small rocket push it.

Or if it's a very small asteroid you can go cast a net and grab it and pull it away.

2018 Summer Box Office Bounces Back, Aiming For Near-Record Season | THR News - Duration: 2:51.

The 2018 summer box office is headed for near-record levels,

even as Hollywood braces for a move that will reshape the film business

with Disney continuing its domination while its bid to take over 20th Century

Fox moves ahead.

The season's revenue is pacing 15 to 16 percent

ahead of last summer, when ticket sales fell to their lowest level in

more than a decade, according to comScore.

Through June 26, domestic summer revenue clocked in at $2 billion

and at its current pace, summer 2018 could come close to matching the

May-August stretch in 2013, when revenue hit a record $4.8 billion at

the domestic box office.

Disney's movies account for more than $1.2 billion of the current

$2 billion total, amounting to a huge 60 percent market share.

Topping the list of summer's top money makers is Disney and Marvel's

'Avengers: Infinity War,' which has taken in more than $670 million

in North America and $2.032 billion globally.

Disney and Pixar's 'Incredibles 2' boasts an early domestic total of $384 million

since its June 15 opening, followed by Fox's 'Deadpool 2'

with a domestic total of $306.2 million.

'Solo: A Star Wars Story' fell far short of expectations for Lucasfilm and Disney,

but it has still added $202.6 million to the bottom line in North America.

Universal's 'Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom,' which just opened domestically on

June 22, will soon overtake 'Solo,'

having grossed $193.4 million through June 28.

Meanwhile, the female-skewing 'Ocean's 8' from Warner Bros.

and 'Book Club' from Paramount, have racked up $105.6 million

and $65.3 million, respectively.

Aside from 'Solo,' the big loser this summer has been comedy.

The genre has been under siege for more than two years, and 2018

hasn't brought much relief.

No comedy has managed to break the $55 million mark this summer.

Melissa McCarthy's 'Life of the Party' tops that list so far with $52.3 million.

Despite a lack of comedic success, the summer season has cemented a

year-over-year gain. Earlier this week, 2018 domestic revenue hit $6 billion

faster than any year in history.

However, the wealth hasn't been spread around evenly.

So far this year, Disney is coming out way in front of the other five

major Hollywood studios with its 36 percent market share.

Fox, the studio Disney is hoping to buy, sits at 12 percent,

Warner Bros. at 11.5 percent,

Universal at 9.5 percent,

Sony at 7 percent

and Paramount at 5.8 percent.

While 'Jurassic Park: Fallen Kingdom' was widely considered the final A-list

tentpole of summer 2018, the July and August calendar is filled with

potential breakouts, including

'Skyscraper,'

'Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again!,'

'Mission: Impossible-Fallout,'

'Hotel Transylvania 3,'

'Crazy Rich Asians'

and 'BlackKklansman,' among others.

Visa, Mastercard said to be near swipe-fee settlement - Daily News - Duration: 1:39.

Visa and Mastercard are close to settling a long-running antitrust lawsuit with merchants over the fees they pay while they accept card payments, the Wall Street Journal reported Thursday, citing people familiar with the matter

Under the settlement, Visa, Mastercard and a number of banks that issue debit and credit cards including JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup and Bank of America would pay the merchants around $6

5 billion, the report said, citing some of the people.  It is not clear how the payment would be split up among the card networks and the issuing banks, according to the report

In a regulatory filing, Mastercard said it would boost its reserve by about $210 million in the second quarter to account for claims related to a lawsuit with merchants

However, it was not clear if the estimated increase in reserve was related to the settlement the WSJ had reported

Visa, Mastercard and JPMorgan were not immediately available to comment on the settlement

Citigroup and Bank of America declined to comment.

Everyday items you may be banned from using in the near future - Duration: 6:29.

Coffee cups, balloons, straws, take away containers and chip packets are just some of the common items that could be phased out across the country — and it may be sooner than you think

Recommendations from a senate report into recycling and Australia's waste suggests that these everyday plastics could be banned by 2023

Chairman of the inquiry, Greens Senator Peter Whish-Wilson, said that it is necessary to put a plan in place to drastically reduce single-use plastics

"Australians are good recyclers, but they've been let down by local, state and federal governments," he told Parliament

"Had we implemented this plan nearly 10 years ago in 2009 we wouldn't be in the crisis that we're in now

" The report recommends the Federal Government works with the states to put less rubbish in landfill and improve the quality of recycling

Though proper recycling is an important part of managing our waste, only 9 per cent of all plastics ever made have been recycled, with the vast majority ending up in landfill

Getting people to stop using items that they have become so accustomed to is a big task and there are a number of organisations out there working to encourage the wider public to change their habits

The Plastic Free July challenge asks people to stop using disposable plastics for the whole month in an effort to raise awareness for our growing waste problem and encourage change

By being challenged to stop using single-use plastic for one month it makes people think about all the unnecessary plastic they use every day

"With Australians already showing support for a war on waste and big supermarkets moving to ban single-use plastic bags, there is no better time to turn concern about the plastic waste problem into personal action," Rebecca Prince-Ruiz from the Plastic Free July Foundation said

"This July, our aim is to inspire and empower all Australians to choose to refuse and collectively contribute by making small changes to their day-to-day actions to make a big difference

" Limiting other forms of plastic shopping bags is also being considered. A spokeswoman for the NSW Environment Protection Authority told news

com.au it was part of a working group exploring ways to reduce the use of the thicker plastic shopping bags provided by department stores and other shops

"These heavy weight or boutique style bags can be a greater source of plastic pollution than lightweight bags because the have up to six times more plastic by weight," the spokeswoman said

"People can reduce their plastic use by taking reusable shopping bags or boxes when shopping, purchasing items with as little packaging as possible, and thinking twice about using disposable plastics such as bags, straws and cutlery

" CSIRO research has shown that approximately three-quarters of the rubbish along the Australian coast was plastic

Most is from Australian sources, not from overseas, with debris concentrated near urban centres

Australia alone uses 6.9 billion plastic bags a year, 3.6 billion of which are plastic shopping bags

Woolworths was the first of the major supermarket chains in Australia to ban all single-use plastic bags from the store, with all others to follow suit by July 1 when the plastic bag bans come into force in Queensland and Western Australia

Following the ban there were reports that Woolworths was considering introducing a policy that would allow shoppers to bring their own containers for meat and fish

But they later downplayed the reports, citing food safety and possible contamination concerns

PLASTIC-FREE ALTERNATIVES Use fabric wraps or reusable containers over cling film

Look for milk in refillable glass bottles Buy cardboard packaged pasta or buy in bulk to reduce plastic use Use several layers of newspaper to line your bin instead of a plastic bag Buy a reusable drink bottle and metal straw to carry with you Try reusable cloth nappies as opposed to disposable ones When you get a takeaway coffee bring your own cup or forego the plastic lid

on the third floor, it was great because my room was almost

directly above Jaden's room, and so whenever I wanted to go see

that the day after he was born, first thing in the morning, get

up, get ready and just go hang out in his room all day.
