He becomes the only openly gay male athlete active in a major professional American sports league

#soccerforall." And on the post he ran a longer message saying: "Tonight my team, Minnesota United, is having their Pride night

It's an important night for me-I'll be announcing for the first time publicly that I am an openly gay player in Major League Soccer

"I have been out as a gay man for many years to my family and friends, and this includes my teammates

I have played Major League Soccer for 6 season: 4 seasons with DC United and 2 seasons Minnesota United

"Today, I'm proud that my entire team and the management of Minnesota United know that I am gay

I have received only kindness and acceptance from everyone in Major League Soccer and that has made the decision to come out publicly that much easier

"As we celebrate Pride night, I want to thank my teammates for their unconditional support for who I am

In light of my experience as a professional athlete, I want to take this moment to encourage others who play sports professionally or otherwise to have confidence that sport will welcome them wholeheartedly

"June is Pride month, and I am proud to be playing for Pride, and to be playing as an out gay man

" Minnesota are set to wear rainbow numbers on their shirts tonight against FC Dallas

"We admire Collin's courage, and are proud of him and of the support from the soccer community," MLS commissioner Don Garber said in a statement

Martin has played for the USA up to Under-20 level and came through the ranks at DC United, making his pro debut in 2013

He joined Minnesota in 2017, when they were rebranded and began playing in the MLS

Robbie Rogers, the first openly gay MLS player, retired as a player in November 2017 due to injury and now works as a TV producer

Rogers had played in England for Leeds United but agreed to terminate his contract in February 2013 before retiring for the game just weeks later

Speaking to the Guardian he said he wanted to avoid the scrutiny and pressure of being the only openly gay player

He said: Would I want to do interviews every day, where people are asking: 'So you're taking showers with guys—how's that?'" But in May he changed his mind and joined LA Galaxy

Speaking to USA Today he said: "I'm 25, I have a platform and a voice to be a role model

How much of a coward was I to not step up to the plate?"

Breaking News - Minnesota United's Collin Martin comes out as gay - Duration: 4:03.

Minnesota United's Collin Martin has announced that he is gay ahead of the club's Pride night on Friday

Following the retirement of LA Galaxy winger Robbie Rogers last November, Martin is the only openly homosexual player currently playing in the MLS

Minnesota play against FC Dallas on Friday and the club will host an evening to showcase inclusiveness and diversity in the MLS

And, just hours before the game is due to kick off, Martin shared his news on social media

'Tonight my team, Minnesota United, is having their Pride night,' Martin wrote on Twitter

'It's an important night for me I'll be announcing for the first time publicly that I am an openly gay player in Major League Soccer

'I have been out as a gay man for many years to my family and friends, and this includes my team-mates

I have played Major League Soccer for six seasons: four seasons with DC United and 2 seasons with Minnesota United

'Today, I'm proud that my entire team and the management of Minnesota United know that I am gay

' Martin went on to thank the MLS for their backing, insisting it made his decision to come out publicly a lot easier, before assuring other professional sportspeople that the community would welcome them when or if they decide to follow in his footsteps

'I have received only kindness and acceptance from everyone in Major League Soccer and that has made the decision to come out publicly that much easier,' he continued

'As we celebrate Pride night, I want to thank my team-mates for their unconditional support for who I am

'In light of my experience as a professional athlete, I want to take this moment to encourage others who play sports professionally or otherwise to have confidence that sport will welcome them wholeheartedly

'June is Pride month, and I am proud to be playing for Pride, and to be playing as an out gay man

' In 2013, Rogers came out as gay shortly after leaving Leeds, becoming the first man in the MLS to do so, but retired last year

In the Premier League, Thomas Hitzelsperger, the former Aston Villa and Everton midfielder, also came out as gay, but following his retirement after a spell at Goodison Park
