Thousands of almost-naked men looking for luck grappled in freezing temperatures to find two sacred sticks at an ancient Japanese festival
Around 10,000 men donned white loincloths and headbands to try to find the two 20cm-long 'lucky' sticks, known as 'shingi', with the two winners crowned the luckiest men of the year
The men-only display was part of the 510-year-old Saidaji-eyo festival held at the Kinryozan Saidaji Buddist temple in Okayama, western Japan, on Saturday
After purifying themselves in the cold water of the Yoshii River - or splashing about with beaming smiles - the festival-goers waited in the darkened temple for the chief priest to throw the sticks in to their throng of bodies
The men then grappled for two hours, with the eventual winners guaranteed happiness and good fortune for the rest of the year
